Tour “Curonian Spit National Park”

Date: Saturday, February 20, 2016

Time: 09:00 – 15:00

Curonian Spit National Park is located in Kaliningrad Oblast’ next to Lithuania, on a narrow strip of land between the salt-water Baltic Sea and the freshwater Curonian Lagoon. The park’s northern boundaries follow the border between Russia and Lithuania.

This park is unique because it is the longest sandy barrier spit in the world. The spit’s dunes are exceptionally beautiful and hold a high aesthetic value.

This is world’s longest sandy spit and one of the oldest national parks in the country.

Woods occupy 72% of the spit’s area with about 600 species of trees, bushes and grasses growing there.

It is inhabited by 296 species of land vertebrates (elks, roes, wild boars, foxes, etc.).

The Curonian Spit is also called a “birds’ bridge.” It lies along the ancient migratory path of birds (150 species) flying from northern areas of Europe to southern Europe and North Africa. In the days of migration, up to one million of our avian friends fly over the spit. It is a home to 102 bird species who nest there. Oldest operating bird observatory in Europe (and one of the oldest in the world) is situated there, in Rybachy settlement. It was established by German theologian and bird lover Johannes Thienemann on January 1, 1901.

Soviet film Treasure Island was shot there in 1982.
